Fears

What about…?

Proverbs 9:10 ESV
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
Proverbs 9:11 ESV
For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life.
Proverbs 9:12 ESV
If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scoff, you alone will bear it.

And...

John 15:15 ESV
No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

The one fear we should embrace...

Reverential awe, essential to worship

Hebrews 12:28–29 HCSB
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us hold on to grace. By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.

Context:

Hebrews 12:14 HCSB
Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness —without it no one will see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:15 HCSB
Make sure that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness springs up, causing trouble and by it, defiling many.
Hebrews 12:16 HCSB
And make sure that there isn’t any immoral or irreverent person like Esau, who sold his birthright in exchange for one meal.
Hebrews 12:17 HCSB
For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected because he didn’t find any opportunity for repentance, though he sought it with tears.
Hebrews 12:18 HCSB
For you have not come to what could be touched, to a blazing fire, to darkness, gloom, and storm,
Hebrews 12:19 HCSB
to the blast of a trumpet, and the sound of words. (Those who heard it begged that not another word be spoken to them,
Hebrews 12:20 HCSB
for they could not bear what was commanded: And if even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned!
Hebrews 12:21 HCSB
The appearance was so terrifying that Moses said, I am terrified and trembling. )
Hebrews 12:22 HCSB
Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God (the heavenly Jerusalem), to myriads of angels in festive gathering,
Hebrews 12:23 HCSB
to the assembly of the firstborn whose names have been written in heaven, to God who is the Judge of all, to the spirits of righteous people made perfect,
Hebrews 12:24 HCSB
to Jesus (mediator of a new covenant ), and to the sprinkled blood, which says better things than the blood of Abel.
Hebrews 12:25 HCSB
Make sure that you do not reject the One who speaks. For if they did not escape when they rejected Him who warned them on earth, even less will we if we turn away from Him who warns us from heaven.
Hebrews 12:26 HCSB
His voice shook the earth at that time, but now He has promised, Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also heaven.
Hebrews 12:27 HCSB
This expression, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of what can be shaken —that is, created things—so that what is not shaken might remain.
Hebrews 12:28–29 HCSB
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us hold on to grace. By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.

Verses 28 & 29 - “Therefore...”

“since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken...”

“let us hold on to grace.”

“By it (grace), we may serve God acceptably…,”

“with reverence and awe…,”

“for our God is a consuming fire.”

We should see worldly fears grow smaller, and reverence (fear) of God grow.

Bringing it all together

John 15:9 HCSB
“As the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Remain in My love.
John 15:10 HCSB
If you keep My commands you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commands and remain in His love.
John 15:11 HCSB
“I have spoken these things to you so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.
John 15:12 HCSB
This is My command: Love one another as I have loved you.
John 15:13 HCSB
No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:14 HCSB
You are My friends if you do what I command you.
John 15:15 HCSB
I do not call you slaves anymore, because a slave doesn’t know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from My Father.
John 15:16 HCSB
You did not choose Me, but I chose you. I appointed you that you should go out and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.
John 15:17 HCSB
This is what I command you: Love one another.
